At Snowbird, Utah’s Freeskiing World Championships last weekend, rookie Sara Mancuso, age 20, placed fifth and earned the Snowbird North Face Young Gun Award. We spoke to her while she was writing music on a pier by Lake Tahoe about her budding ski career and the influence of her older sister, Julia Mancuso, who won two silver medals at the 2010 Olympics.

On Saturday, the women skiers and snowboarders tackled Verbier, Switzerland's Bec de Rosses to compete in the final stop of the Freeride World Tour. Norway's Ane Enderud repeated her victory from last year, Jackson Hole's Jess McMillan took second, and wild card entry Julia Mancuso, fresh off her two Olympic silver medals, took an impressive third place. It was an unlucky day for America's two top female ski racers: Lindsey Vonn crashed into the fence during the GS race and obstructed the run of her teammate Julia Mancuso, who was granted a rerun but finished a disappointing 1.30 seconds behind the current leader. The second run of the race takes place Thursday.

After a silver medal in Wednesday's women's downhill, American Julia Mancuso nabbed the silver in Thursday's super combined, which includes a downhill run and a slalom run. Thanks to a gold medal in GS at the Torino Winter Olympics four years ago, that makes Julia the only American female ski racer to win three Olympic medals.

Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso made history yesterday when they claimed the gold and silver in the ladies downhill. We were there while they toasted glasses of champagne and celebrated with friends and family.
