Summertime means the mountains are dry and face shots are replaced with mouthfuls of dirt and broken bikes. How’s a skier to get that intoxicating adrenaline rush without all the dust and blood? Go surfing. The beach might be a long way away from the mountains, but here are some ideas to help you shorten your search for clean waves and good times.

Brian Bielmann is a Hawaii-based surf photographer who shoots for magazines like Transworld Surf and companies like Volcom and Red Bull. In April, he competed against ski photographers at a photo contest at the Whistler World Ski and Snowboard Festival—and he won. We spoke to Beilmann about the differences between ski and surf photography.
