Best of 2000: Best New Boot Technology

posted: 09/01/1999

Automatic Locks

Head's Cyber series' Auto Ski Walk System is an ingenious new approach to an old idea. In walk mode, the cuff is unlocked; when the boot is clicked into a binding, the cuff is automatically locked securely to the boot.

Exit the binding and voilà, the boot cuff unlocks-no fussing with levers, buckles, or buttons. $250-$350

All Tricked Out

The Tecnica Icon Carbon is the most technically sophisticated boot available. The cuff consists of removable inside and outside flaps (available in stiff and soft versions) and a stiff spine. Add the usual flex, lean, and alignment adjustments for a highly adaptable boot.

Oh, and there's the Endo Frame, a skeleton-like shell reinforcement; a new dual-material antivibration system; and a new tongue with sliding system and impact absorber. $725

Do-it-yourself boot fitting The new ZipFit liner makes custom boot fitting so simple, you can do it in your kitchen. Microwave the liner for a minute, slide it into the boot, insert foot, and presto! The liner's mudlike molding materials conform to your foot in seconds. $175
