CamelBak TransAlp

CamelBak perfected under-jacket hydration a season or two ago, but I always found it cumbersome when carrying a daypack. Then I discovered the TransAlp, which combines 100 ounces of hydration with a comfortable, low-slung, 1,500-cubic-inch pack. Its three convenient compartments provided plenty of stowage for extra layers, a shovel, and food. For frigid days, I added CamelBak's Thermal Control Kit ($16), an insulated tube and mouthpiece cover, but still needed to blow the water out of the tube to keep it from freezing.
