ArapahoeGlacier

It’s August and it’s hot. I would kill to ski a decent line right now. Every morning on my commute to the office in Boulder, CO I have the Arapahoe Glacier staring me in my grille, taunting me. It looks so close, so fun to ski; yet it’s so unattainable. The problem is it’s illegal to ski. And at this point in the summer skiing is all I want. The glacier, which was downgraded to snowfield status in 1998, is off limits to the public in order to protect water quality for the city of Boulder. I can look, but I can’t ski. Fortunately the days are getting shorter and the ski season is getting nearer. But in the meantime I might, just might, have to sneak in and poach the hoe.

Here are a few cool shots of the Arapahoe Glacier taken by by Ed Tangen from the days before global warming in 1921:

The Republic might not want you on their ho(e)

Yo flatland ski Bro,

If you are jonesing that hard for some August turns try St. Mary’s off of I-70. Hint: it’s on the east side of the tunnel.

We’re not talking Portillo. Put some spring wax on, hike and enjoy the corn. Some kids put up kickers and other features.

My buddy and his son just got in some “early season” turns and had a blast. Just don’t try and swim in the lake. Some kid tried a couple of weeks ago and was taken out in a body bag.

Have a great time!
