Beer of the Week
Magic Hat Brewing Company: Hocus Pocus

If you’re like me, the constant barrage of political rhetoric of election season has driven you a little batty. And while the two candidates—we’ll call them tweedle-dee and tweedle-dumb—show no signs of slowing their circuitous game of grab-ass, I’ve promised myself to get informed and make an educated decision in the November election. It will be my final act of adult responsibility before checking out for ski season and reverting back to toddler speak, storm chasing, excessive beer drinking, and general real-world ignorance.

To honor the occasion, I’ve decided to drink one of the nation’s few democratically elected beers, Hocus Pocus by Vermont-based Magic Hat Brewing Company. Previously retired, Hocus Pocus won a hard fought battle against other former Magic Hat brews in an election that doubled as a voter registration campaign in partnership with HeadCount. Its prize for winning: resurrection and a fresh release through the election season for the masses to enjoy.

Being a lifelong Westerner, I’ve only heard about Hocus Pocus through my chest-beating Vermont-bred friends. I've got to give them credit. Hocus Pocus is a darn fine beverage. A crystal clear, straw-colored beer, Hocus Pocus starts out with noticeable lemony and grassy aromas. It smells light, airy, and approachable. Its flavor begins with a tart, almost Granny-Smith-apple-like sweetness, and then it finishes crisp, dry, and refreshing. Hocus Pocus is a perfectly sessionable wheat beer made for hot, dry, patriotic afternoons.
