“When we started doing this, it was unbelievably unique,” says Whistler’s Josh Kearns “There’s not a lot of barbecue in Canada.” The Canadian National Championships started out small in 1990, now, it’s the biggest barbecue festival in the Pacific Northwest. It takes place over three days, more than 40,000 people show up, and the winners are automatically entered in American Royal World Championships, in Kansas, where there IS a lot of barbecue. Visitors can sign up for a judging class, and then become official judges who get to sample all of the goods
