Best Photo of the Year
Shot of the Year?
Photo: Jordan Maney

For me, skiing is equal parts fantasy and reality. I spend as much time fantasizing about lines and destinations as I do actually skiing. What struck me about this photo was how surreal it felt. If there is skiing in Narnia, this is probably what it looks like—and it’s where I’d want to be. For this shot, photographer Jordan Manley found 20 fresh inches at Monashee Powder Snowcats with skier Daryl Treadway. Manley then converted his image to black and white, and bumped up the contrast to bring out the interesting texture in the snow and the definition of each flute.  —Niall Bouzon, photo editor

Daryl Treadway at Monashee Powder Snowcats, BC, by Jordan Manley. Nikon D700, 1/1250, f/5.6, ISO 400. Lens: 50mm, f/1.8.
