Burning and Looting
Mount Baldy
Photo: Chris Figenshau

Inside the Sun valley forest fire—and skiing its aftermath. What happened when fire ravaged 50,000 acres around Sun Valley, Idaho, in August 2007?  No lives or houses were lost. But a swath of steep, north-facing backcountry terrain became instantly gladed and skiable. With a little help from Sun Valley Heli Ski Guides, locals Zach and Reggie Crist—who were forced to evacuate their homes during the fire—explored the newly altered terrain. Here’s what they found.
