This shot by photographer Adam Clark of skier Bryce Phillips took some timing—12 minutes to be exact. The two sped their ’91 Chevy minivan with red velour interior from Juneau to the small fishing town of Haines, Alaska, where they “signed a waiver, put all our gear on in the parking lot, did a beacon search, and hopped in a heli that was coming in for a fuel run,” Clark says. Twelve minutes after ditching the van they peered down Buns of Steel, a 5,000-foot line stacked with maritime fluff. “Bryce and I could’ve gone home happy after this shot,” Clark says, “but we didn’t complain about three more days in Haines.”
