Constructed in 1938 alongside the Holden Mine, once one of the largest copper mines in the nation, the town was abandoned in 1957 when copper prices plummeted. It remained empty until 1962, when the Lutheran Bible Institute purchased it for one dollar. Because it’s on Forest Service land, where any changes require federal approval, and because it’s so remote, it looks exactly as it did 60 years ago. Guests at the Lutheran retreat stay in the old miners’ bunkhouses, and the staff lives in the chalets that were home to mining officials.
