Mountain Athlete Ski Training
Welcome to the danger zone
Photo: Brigid Mander

We sprint, do squats, Olympic lifts, upper body strength training, core training, drag weighted sleds around forwards and backwards. I pull large kettle bells on ropes while Max climbs a rope straight up to the ceiling. Max comes here five days a week, doing some workouts much more intense than today.

Max will be skiing in a few weeks in New Zealand. The program is now ski specific, crushing, and awesome, and focuses on eccentric muscle contraction, a new approach to alleviating the burn, unlike traditional training programs. which concentrate on concentric contraction. We go non-stop for the entire hour, and since my pain-relieving hormones kicked in after about five minutes with Max, I make it through (ok, I also got to use slightly lighter weights…).
