When criticized that his lifestyle was hurting his training, Tomba replied: "I used to party with three women until 5 a.m. Now, I'll live it up with five women until 3 a.m." Always playing to the crowd, Tomba put sex back into skiing. When wooing ice skater Katarina Witt at the 1988 Olympics, Tomba offered her a gold medal, explaining he already had two.
