Skiing Magazine's 2008-09 Big-Mountain Backcountry Skis (Women's)
TELE & AT: Black Diamond Joule

125/95/112 | $600

Nearly all described this ski as “stable.” It also ranked best in the group for hard-snow grip. Plus: Light for a stiff ski—which is great for the uphill climb. Minus: Though it eventually gripped well, it didn’t initiate turns very quickly. Testers wanted a bit more sidecut. Tester’s Take: “Skis like a pair of 200-centimeter-long downhill boards.” —Megan Michelson
