Summer Reading List
Books

Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain-Bruce Tremper
If you plan on venturing into the backcountry, “Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain” is a must read. The bible of out of bounds safety was written by Bruce Tremper, who’s been the director of the Utah Avalanche Center since 1986. It’s slammed full of information, but it’s organized and explained in an easy-to-absorb manner.

In Search of Powder-Jeremy Evans
Is the ski bum a dying breed? Jeremy Evans looks at changes in the American West through the eyes of a dirtbag. Even if you’re not a once or future ski bum, it’s an interesting look at mountain town culture.

Edge of Never-Bill Kerig
In 1996, ski mountaineer Trevor Petersen died skiing in France. In 2005, his son Kye, who was 15 at the time, went back to Chamonix to ski the line that killed his father. The Edge of Never, which was also made into a movie, is the story of that trip.

Wild Snow-Lou Dawson
Not exactly a strong narrative read, but Dawson’s look at 54 classic ski lines will buff out your skiing to-do list.

White Planet-Leslie Anthony
Les Anthony, who has been writing about skiing for years as an editor at Powder and SBC Skier, compiled stories about his skiing adventures from China to Lebanon.

Wine, Women, Warren & Skis-Warren Miller
Because what else is there to write about? Miller’s manifesto is out of print, but if you can get your hands on it, it’s well worth a read.
