The 102-mm Coomback, the posthumous pro model of legendary ski mountaineer Doug Coombs, weighs in at the same 1820 grams as the 112-mm BackDroup. That's a factor of its beefier construction, designed to handle the real-world range of backcountry snow conditions. Denser fir is used instead of feather light paulownia to give it a more substantial feel and enhanced durability. All K2 Backside models are lightweight cap constructions on wood cores, with carbon and fiberglass reinforcement. K2's All-Terrain Rocker combines 70 percent camber with 30 percent tip/shovel rocker to smooth the ride, enhance forgiveness and improve soft-snow flotation. Snowphobic topsheets are chemically treated to shed snow that would otherwise add weight on ascents. All Backside skis have removeable tip and tail grommets for easy attachment of K2 Z-Clip climbing skins. In addition to skins, K2 offers a full line of backcountry equipment: probes, shovels, ski-carry packs, adjustable poles and even a shovel/ice-axe combo tool. Skin choices include economical nylon or easier-gliding mohair/nylon blend, and are available either trim-to-fit (cutting tool included) or precut to fit some K2 models.
