Völkl Attiva S4 (2007)
A winner in short turns, long turns, and hard-snow grip, the S4’s progressive flex (softer in the tip, stiffer toward the tail) and turning stability satisfied intermediate and expert skiers. gripes: It’s a turner. That’s not bad—it just makes straightlining less stable than arcing. props: Has the performance and control of a wood core, but balsa laminates make it lighter and softer (like the Attiva S5, page 97). tester’s take: "They’re hungry to turn, carve, or slide; maneuverable from a centered or backseat position." —Jen Brown
