2011 Snow Projections for Chile
2011 Snow Projections for Chile
So it was an epic year for snow in North America! I am unable to stop thinking about strapping back in ASAP and am considering a trip to South America this summer for some skiing.
I'm not an expert here... but it looks like we are in a La Nina year which was great if you were in the Northern hemisphere but can mean drought like conditions in the Southern hemisphere with limited snowfall.
Can anyone provide any insight?
Thanks!

Not quite sure about weather predictions for South America. I do have several friends traveling to work at various resorts there this "summer". However, depending on where you live, Mammoth Mountain in California will be open every day until the fourth of July. Shoulder season deals are great and they're skiing top to bottom from 11,053'!
Question:

I travel to Chile every summer and ski Portillo and Valle Nevado. You can check their sites and get a snow report. Even if the snow isn't great the skiing there is always good. Lots of short hikes and not very many people. Last year wasn't a great snow yoour so lets hope it's a good one in 2011. You can write to me in August if you want an honest report. kim@skiwithkim.com
Question:

National weather service of Chile is predicting a slow down in La Nina cycle from now into June then trending toward normal, with a slight warm up in July that should bring average to above average precipitation for the ski season.
Last season (2010) was a strong La Nina which kept things very cold and dry around Portillo, Valle Nevado, Las Lenas, while the south (Chillan, Pucon, Bariloche) was cold so every time there was precip it was generally snow which made for an incredible year for Patagonia.
2011, if the national weather service is right, should be average to above average. August should be sweet!
