rent, ship or fly with skiis
taking a trip from east coast to Utah in March. Is it better to fly with you own boots and skiis or to rent or to ship them ahead? Thank you!

Been there done both. Bottom line for the best experience ... pack your own boots & gear. Skis you can rent or get a deal on good demos for the week. That way you can try skis that best fit the type of snow your experiencing. Good luck, hope you get some deep pow!
Question:

If money is no object - ship 'em. If you're like most of us, carry on your boots and check your skis. Renting demo skis will probably run about $30 a day with maybe a 20% discount for a week long rental. I've always taken my skis with me and never had the airlines lose them yet. But there is always a first time.
Question:

Boots? Never leave home without 'em... Put the boots in a carry-on. Rentals aren't cheap anymore & Demos are $$$, most shops are charging $50 a day here in Summit County Colorado, can't imagine they'd be less in Utah... I always take my skis. I have a SportsTube that holds 3 pair of skis. Took it to Europe too. You can get one that holds a single pair for around $90. It's made of heavy duty plastic and holds up well. Not to worry about "oversized" luggage costs either. Airlines don't charge extra for skis flying into ski country.
Question:

The previous poster said airlines don't charge for skis flying into ski country. You might want to double check on that, some of them do. Southwest doesn't. Also, flying abroad, Air France once charged us extra for skis (but didn't on the way there, only back.) Even with a charge, it's probably cheaper to bring your skis as well as boots.
Question:
If you are going where there are not good demo skis always sjip your own gear but these days take the boots and beat it. Why waste time and energy with boards when you can land and demo what you need to match the conditions. Keep in mind this is for the average skier. If you are filming, skiing super hard where you need a heavy din or bull headed take your boards. Spend the money to get your skis where you are going on demo skis where you will be and call it good.
Question:
Boots in carry-on, pre-purchase rentals. Be sure the shop you are renting from has current year inventory. Get demos and have a ball trying out a bunch of new stuff. In the West where conditions can vary widely, you can be sure you will have boards best suited for the terrain and conditions you will be skiing on any given day. Most (good) shops will let you exchange as many times as you like during your visit...and oh yeah: Make sure it is a slopeside shop so that you can trade out quickly and easily.
Question:

I always carry on boots but ship my skis. I have done this for years and by the time I fille my triple ski tube with clothes and other goodies its cheaper and easier to have fed ex or ups deliver them to the condo or hotel.
The cost is about the same as most airlines charge for carry on and no hassle.
