Telluride Dedicates Run to Captain Jack

Locals are invited to help glade a new run honoring the ebullient ski bum.

Fly directly into the Telluride Regional Airport or the Montrose Regional Airport (about an hour away), which you can get to via direct jet service from 9 major cities including Newark, Los Angeles, Houston, and Atlanta. Enjoy the stunning scenery and leave the driving up to someone else by taking a shuttle into town. To get around town, hop on the Galloping Goose shuttle service. To get from the historic town of Telluride up to the Mountain Village, take Telluride’s distinctive gondola. The 13-minute ride helps you avoid the 20-minute, 8-mile drive between the two towns. Once you’re up in Mountain Village, you can Dial-a-Ride for free transportation around the village.

On July 17, Telluride, Colorado, lost a legend—Captain Jack Carey, a 64-year-old skier who spent the past three decades in T-Ride nabbing first chairs and generally living the life. Captain Jack, who once graced the cover of Skiing Magazine, died in a bike accident this summer. Now the resort will honor him with his own run.

The dedication of Captain Jack’s, a popular tree run off Lift 9 informally known as Locals, will take place on September 25, and everyone’s invited to help clear trees and debris. All participants will be picked up by Telluride Ski Resort vehicles at 9 a.m. at the top of the gondola, and then transferred to the top of the run, where employees will guide crews to areas in need of glading. A BBQ and free beer reception at the Hop Garden will follow. The event is BYOT (bring your own tools) and a one-day lift ticket voucher will be given to all participants. Pre-registration is required to participate. Please R.S.V.P. to Lori Golzar at 970-728-6900. Says resort CEO Dave Riley, “It is only fitting a local’s favorite powder run be dedicated to this man, admired and adored in Telluride and throughout the ski industry.”
