BRETTON WOODS, N.H. (April 28) - Friday will be Bode Miller Day in New Hampshire in honor of the world and World Cup ski champion from Franconia. The official pronouncement by Gov. John Lynch will take place at the base lodge of Bretton Woods Mountain Resort where Miller is director of skiing.
The proclamation also will formally open the BodeFest Ski and Golf Challenge 2005, the second annual fundraiser at BW. The program includes skiing Saturday with Miller, who won both the downhill and super G gold medals at the 2005 World Championships in Italy and, by season's end, became the first American to win the World Cup overall title since 1983. He also won the super G world Cup crown; overall, Miller won seven races during the season plus the two races at Worlds in Bormio.
In a pre-BodeFest comment, the governor cited Miller's "hard work, dedication, innovation and his never-quit attitude" as he urged New Hampshire residents to help honor Miller's achievements. Miller, 27, lives a half-four away in Franconia but is building a home at Bretton Woods, where he has been director of skiing for about two years. Last summer, he designed a ski trail at the mountain resort.
BodeFest is designed as a combination fun way to end the season and to also raise funds for the Bretton Woods Adaptive Program. After a reception Friday night at BW's Slopeside Pub, featuring a freestyle trampoline aerial show presented by Jumpin' Jack Sports and former world champion Nico Fontaine of Canada. Miller also will host his weekly Sirius Satellite Radio show from Bretton Woods Friday night.
Saturday has a split personality - four-person teams competing in a modified giant slalom followed by a barbecue and then a nine-hole scramble tournament to open the golf season across Route 302 at the Mount Washington Resort. The Barilla Pasta Awards dinner in the ballroom of the historic Mount Washington Hotel (1902) will include prizes from Barilla and Sirius Satellite Radio.
