Golden, CO, Oct. 12, 2000--Last year 22 avalanche fatalities were recorded in the US, with 9 deaths tallied in Colorado alone. As more winter sports enthusiasts make outings to secluded territory, the number of accidents will surely rise, unless backcountry explorers prepare for both expected and unforeseen dangers.

To combat such accidents, the Backcountry Skiers Alliance offers four free seminars on prudent winter backcountry travel. These courses explore such topics as avalanche awareness, proper backcountry equipment, winter navigation and orientation, and winter medical emergencies. Besides serving as an introduction to backcountry winter safety, the courses will supply attendees with resources for further instruction. The workshops run from 6:30-9:00 P.M., Fridays Oct. 13, 20, 27, and Nov. 3, 2000.

For more information about the Backcountry Skills Alliance, check out . Before you plan a trip into the backcountry, get the Colorado Avalanche Information Center's latest updates at .

All courses are free and take place at The Mountaineering Center Auditorium, located at 710 10th Street in Golden, Colorado. Contact Dave Beitel from the Backcountry Skiers Alliance for more information about these courses. Phone: (303) 898-7698. Fax: (303) 935-1762. Email:
