Whitefish, MT, March 22, 2001--In an effort to transform Big Mountain Ski & Summer Resort, MT into a world class four-season destination, Winter Sports Inc., owner and operator of said resort agreed to let Hines Resorts develop a $300 million base village.
The base area development, named Glacier Village at Big Mountain, will have over 700 residential and lodging units, at least one hotel, condominiums and town homes, employee housing, approximately 80,000 square feet of commercial space, and a conference center. Initial construction projects will begin this summer and span an eight-to-10-year period. By the project's completion the bed base is expected to grow from 1,600 to 5,400.
Other Hines resort developments include Aspen Highlands Village in Aspen, FiveTrees in Aspen, Zephyr Mountain Lodge in Winter Park, and River Valley Ranch, a residential golf course community in Carbondale.
According to Dennis Green, chairman of Winter Sports, Inc., Big Mountain is poised for development with increased accessibility to the resort through Glacier International Airport, increasing skier visits, and its close proximity to Glacier National Park, 10 golf courses, and dozens of near by lakes.
"With the combination of skiing, lakes, golf and history, Big Mountain, Whitefish and Flathead Valley are completely unique to anywhere in North America," said Gerald Hines, founder and chairman of Hines.
Designs for the pedestrian-scale village include streets lined with retail shops and restaurants, year round services and a world class conference all architecturally inspired by Glacier National Park and Montana's ranches and historical towns.
