River Awareness Week Comes to Crested-Butte

GUNNISON-CRESTED BUTTE, CO June 8, 2004 - High Country Citizens' Alliance is pleased to announce the first annual River Awareness Week, to be held June 22-25, to promote awareness about the role of rivers in the local environment and economy. Held in conjunction with the Gunnison Whitewater Festival, the event is open to the public and features hikes, films, fly-fishing workshops, and a night of bluegrass music.

River Awareness Week kicks off on Tuesday, June 22, with registration for events at the HCCA office, followed by the Black Canyon Bluegrass fundraiser at the Almont Resort, featuring local favorites, The Hand Me Downs, and the ever-popular, Paonia-based Sweet Sunny South. Hikes during the week to Union Park, the abandoned Standard Mine on the flanks of Mt. Emmons, and into the Black Canyon will be educational excursions incorporating local history as well as current water issues for these important areas.

On Wednesday, June 23 the film, Troubled Waters, will be shown at the Crested Butte Center for the Arts, and on Thursday, June 24, the Gunnison Arts Center will host the presentation, "Water, Our Most Precious Resource, with speakers from Trout Unlimited, Western Resource Advocates, and High Country Citizens' Alliance. Scheduled workshops throughout the week include beginner and advanced fly-fishing workshops, as well as a sea kayaking demo day at Blue Mesa.
