Three years ago, 25-year-old jamie Sundberg was driving home to Jackson Hole from a snowboarding comp in Utah. She stopped at her childhood home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, stole her mom's rear-entry boots and shaped skis, and brought them to Jackson.

"I had this urge to put skis back on and goof around," says Sundberg, who started skiing at age two but had been snowboarding competitively for a decade. "I took a couple runs," she says. "Then I jumped in the pipe. Once I found I could launch past the lip, it was all over."

After several top-10 finishes in national snowboard halfpipe contests and with sponsorships from Burton and Jackson Hole, Sundberg found herself hooked on skiing again.

The next year, she joined both Atomic's Freeride and Snowboard teams-the only person ever to do so. Sundberg switched over to skiing entirely last season. And it paid off: At the 2002 U.S. Freeskiing Open in Vail, she took first in the Superpipe and fifth in Slopestyle.

Meanwhile-thanks to the cadre of hard-charging Jackson locals she's been skiing with-Sundberg has developed a love for big-mountain, backcountry-oriented skiing. "Being on two boards instead of one really opens up the whole mountain," she says. "You become so much more mobile."
