There's a time and a place for the gym. For skiers, spring is not it. This year, as cabin fever sets in, take your fitness regimen outdoors with one of skiing's best cross-training alternatives: snowshoeing.

"We recommend snowshoeing to all the U.S. Ski Team kids we work with," says John Atkins, athletic trainer at the Howard Head Sports Medicine Center in Vail, Colo., the rehab arm of the famed Steadman Hawkins Clinic. That's because snowshoeing is a low-impact, total-body workout with ample crossover skills for skiers, explains Atkins, who snowshoes two or three times a week throughout the winter.
