Ski Porn with a Cause

While seeing their Jackson Hole, Wyoming, neighbors bristle over a contentious base-development proposal, East Coast transplants Chris Kitchen, 26, and Sam Pope, 28, decided to get in on the discussion-one digital frame after another. The result of their involvement is Sanctified: the first ski movie to come at powder shots and cliff hucks from an angle that most ski auteurs won't touch-advocacy.

"We got tired of watching big developments go in at Jackson and feeling like we didn't have a voice," says Kitchen. Filmed at Jackson, a handful of other Western resorts, and the backcountry of Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado, Sanctified's ski action titillates. The interwoven appearances by conservationists, scientists, resort owners, and other pundits remind skiers about such cantankerous subjects as global warming, base-area development, and use of public lands. Balance, clearly, is not the filmmakers' mission, especially in regards to development, but the film does provide some compelling commentary about global warming (including an assertion that skiing could be nonexistent in the Rockies by 2050). And the ski footage, while raw, is impressive, particularly the scenes in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains. So is it worth your time? The short answer is yes. Between all the powder and dogma, Sanctified ultimately stresses the importance of getting involved. "Mountains are sacred places and need to be treated as such," says Pope. "These environmental issues need to be acted upon now, not next year or in a couple of years."
