Hunter, NY, Jan. 6--Casey Puckett (Crested Butte, CO), anxious tospank teammates Dane Spencer (Boise, ID) and Thomas Vonn (Newburgh, NY)in a $100,000 Super Series giant slalom before heading back to World Cupaction in Europe, laid-down an outstanding first run Thursday andbreezed to victory by more than seven-tenths of a second at HunterMountain.
"I decided to take some risks on that first run," Puckett explainedafter winning in 2:08.25, "because I knew Spencer and Vonn would betough. We always try to beat each other, so I decided it'd be all ornothing. I'm happy."
Spencer finished second under a sunny sky in 15-degree weather with atime of 2:08.98 and Vonn tied Marco Sullivan (Tahoe City, CA) for thirdin 2:09.44.
U.S. Coach Thomas Erhard said first-run mistakes by Vonn and Spencerscuttled their chances as Puckett skied well and backed it with a solidsecond run. A second consecutive night of near-zero cold helped furthersolidify the course after two days of rainy Super Series slaloms atHunter.
