Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort Teams Up With Tahoe/Reno International Film Festival To Present Cinemasports

TRUCKEE, CA - (News Release) - The "Iron Chef" of filmmaking, otherwise known as "Cinemasports," will descend on Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort August 26, 2006, in conjunction with the second annual Tahoe-Reno International Film Festival (T-RIFF) - allowing anyone who has ever thought of making a movie to try their hand at filmmaking.

Cinemasports is an energetic fusion of imagination, collaboration, and tournament that is a unique and spontaneous form of guerilla filmmaking. This popular daylong contest was founded in San Francisco by Jin Woo Joo. Cinemasports is a free event for all ages.

Teams meet in the morning for an orientation and a list of three mystery ingredients that must be included in all films. Each team has 10 hours to complete a movie with this surprise list of ingredients. For example: (1) somebody eating something yellow, an instance of mistaken identity and a howl in the distance, or (2) an English teacher, a tattoo parlor and a squashed tomato.

Each team will need a digital camcorder, a laptop, and the simplest movie editing software. Even people without any equipment, experience, or a team can show up at the morning kickoff meeting, find an eager team and participate. The contest begins at 9 a.m. and movies will need to be completed by 7 p.m.

Films are screened in the 11th hour and each member of the winning team will receive a lift ticket from Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort for the upcoming season. The public screening is open to anyone and usually sells out. There will be a $10 charge to watch the films. Up to 35 mini-films three to five minutes in length will be shown, beginning at 8 p.m.

In the words of Roberto from the Proletariat Film team out of New York, "...the timed contests are what separate real filmmakers from filmmakers with no talent and tons of money. While the clock is ticking you really only have a camera and your brilliance to work with." Three-time Oscar winner Walter Much says, "Something emerges that's not contained in any of the films..."

It is not unusual for this event to draw up to 20 teams and an audience of 500 who are "laughing and applauding with general merriment all around," according to producers of T-RIFF. "The energy in the room is electric, like a live show, as all witness the various ways in which the same elements have been used to make entirely different movies."

In 2005, Cinemasports staged events in 15 cities worldwide. Teams from around the world can register online at www.cinemasports.com and click on the "Calendar" button. T-RIFF is a five-day exploration of discovery through soul stirring and spirited independent films that open the hearts and minds of movie lovers.
