Gear 2000: Conventional Rides

posted: 10/01/1999

Even though this is a year of radical change in slalom skis, most manufacturers are still offering more traditionally shaped slaloms, some of them only a couple years off the drawing board and still lively enough to kick serious butt. Here are the ones our testers particularly liked:

  • Rossignol 9S Pro 9.1 ($749):
  • The second-highest-rated slalom ski in the test. "A perfect slalom race ski," said one tester. "Doesn't flinch when you stomp on it."
  • Atomic Beta Race 9.34 RC ($910):
  • All the testers appreciated its smoothness and stability. "Will dust the competition on turny mountain roads and hold its own on the autobahn," said one tester.
  • Dynastar Speed ST ($725):
  • Extremely versatile; this is a traditional fall-liner for the whole mountain. The test report: "No frills, bells, or whistles¿just a good short-turn ski for the strong, athletic skier." Dynastar also has a new shaped slalom, the Speed STc, but it was introduced after our test was over. ">Check out the SKIING Magazine article, Gear 2000: Slalom Race
