If you want to fend off the flu this winter, here's something to ponder: Meditation, long known to reduce stress, may also boost the immune system. In a four-month study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 25 people practiced intense and focused "mindfulness meditation" for an hour a day, six days a week. After eight weeks, they-and a non-meditating control group of 16-received a flu shot. By the end of the study, the lamas in training had significantly more disease-fighting antibodies in their blood than the control group. Assume the lotus position now and you could be sniffle- free all season. -Evelyn Spence
