Extreme Race Gears Up Down-Under

posted: 01/01/2000

Coronet, New Zealand, July 10--Preparations are underway for the Compaq 50K in Coronet, the first 16-hour ski race in New Zealand. This downhill spectacle, modeled after the 24 Hours of Aspen relay race, starts at 6 p.m. on July 17 and goes all night until 10 a.m. the next morning.

Teams of three compete with two on the course the entire time. Both team members must cross the finish line within three seconds of each other or face a penalty.

Junior competitors add a youthful dimension to the event by participating in their own endurance race, the BMW Junior Racers 5K. Junior speedsters will race downhill in relay fashion on July 16 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Check back with in the upcoming weeks for updates on the Coronet 50K.
