Outfitter: Trial Run, Suunto Altimax

posted: 09/01/1999

Suunto Altimax

If you're planning a backcountry ski trip, this multifunctional watch is as useful as duct tape. Among the 12,000-foot perches of Colorado's Indian Peaks, it accurately tracked my altitude to within 10 feet. It also measured barometric pressure changes, calculated ascent and descent speeds, tracked my total vertical, and counted the number of runs I skied. But what I appreciated most was its enormous, easy-to-read face, which belied its ultralight weight (1.9 ounces).
