WHISTLER, BC - To ski or snowboard on the Horstman Glacier in the summer is to be part of one of the hottest scenes at Whistler Blackcomb. A cool 85cms of fresh snow fell at the glacier elevation in May and has created excellent conditions. Camp participants and the public can look forward to a solid shred experience when summer skiing and riding begins on June 11.
"To get this much snow during the month of May is a real bonus. Eighty-five centimeters of fresh has made a huge difference to the quality of the glacier," says Tom Rimmer of the Whistler Blackcomb summer glacier operations team. "It lowered the temperature of the snow on the top layer of the glacier and grooming in the fresh snow has made for good conditions."
Summer skiing and riding on Blackcomb Mountain officially kicks off this Saturday, June 11 and is scheduled to end in late July.
"We've been farming snow with fencing which is something we have never done before on the glacier," says Rimmer. "We also moved snow from adjacent areas onto the glacier. With this new snow we are ahead of where we were last year at this time in terms of snow depth."
The Horstman Glacier offers a Superpipe and a variety of large and small terrain features for camp participants in their reserved areas, as well as groomed and mogul runs, and assorted rails and features for the public to play on. The Horstman Glacier is open for public skiing and riding everyday from 10:30am until 3pm with upload via the Wizard Express at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. The scenic trip to the top of Horstman Glacier via three open-air chair lifts and a bus takes approximately 45 minutes from the valley.
Glacier camps are a big draw in the summer, especially for up and comers aspiring to break into the world of professional skiing and riding. Campers from all over the world join some of the biggest names in the sport for a truly atypical summer camp experience. With up to 1,000 campers and coaches ascending the glacier each day it is the ultimate scene, a place where the latest tricks are dialed and fashion statements are made.
"Being able to ski and snowboard in the middle of summer is an incredible experience for our guests," says Stuart Rempel, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Whistler Blackcomb. "Access to the Horstman Glacier has created the kind of mountain recreation experience visitors to Whistler have come to expect, at any time of the year."
For people wanting to really test themselves Whistler Blackcomb is offering the ultimate in one-day adventure. The Uber Pass allows visitors to ride the Bike Park, hike and sightsee on Whistler Mountain, experience the new Peak Adventure and ski or ride on Blackcomb's Horstman Glacier.
