It's not often that a hotel can claim its own ski hill. True, 700 vertical feet is no Killington (30 minutes away), but Twin Farms, on a 300-acre country estate, calls this six-trail slope its own, and you need not be part of any private club to ski it. You do have to be a guest, lodging in one of a dozen charming cottages. Two favorites are Orchard, with two hand-carved fireplaces, white ash floors and tree-studded mountain views; and Woods, with vaulted ceilings, arched picture windows and a Rococo-style décor that imparts a Tuscan feel.

With every stay comes full access to the main house — a meticulously restored farmhouse once owned by novelist Sinclair Lewis — where decadent meals by chef Ted Ask are served in the elegant dining room. Other indulgences include Maple Facials and Soul Soother body treatments in the Out of the Woods Spa, soaks in the 104-degree Japanese sunken-stone hot pools, nordic skiing on six miles of groomed trails and ice skating on a private rink. And, of course, skiers in search of more serious vertical will find it at Killington or Okemo, also 30 minutes away.

Rates, with all meals and activities, from $1,050 per room, double occupancy; twinfarms.com; 800-894-6327
